Visiting Instructor: Mathieu Grodet 

This workshop delves into the classic glass practice of murrine. From the ancient Mesopotamia to Venice to new contemporary takes, students will look at the history, techniques and theory to create original murrine. Students will use methods discussed and demonstrated in class to flamework their own design. Each step will be broken down in the process and there will be some one on one instruction. Everyday students will be able to add a step or more to their main design, growing in size as well as complexity. On completion of this workshop, students will be able to create several unique elements using multiple techniques including some coldworking.

All materials are included. Age 16+.

About the Visiting Instructor

Mathieu Grodet is an award-winning glass artist, flameworker, illustrator, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of centuries-old craft and contemporary culture. Born in Orléans, France and now based in Killaloe, Ontario, he uses glass as both a material and a medium for storytelling, creating intricate works that blend technical mastery with curiosity, humour, and social commentary.

Drawing from the rich history of glassmaking while pushing its possibilities forward, Grodet's sculptures, vessels, and murrine-based works challenge expectations of what glass can be. His practice often explores themes of identity, language, symbolism, and human behaviour, transforming familiar forms into objects that invite closer inspection and deeper conversation.

A sought-after instructor and lecturer, Grodet has taught flameworking, glassblowing, and enamelling throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, sharing his expertise with artists and institutions across China, Japan, Turkey, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and the United States.

His work is held in private collections internationally and in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Whether working behind the torch or in the classroom, Grodet is driven by a belief that craft, when paired with imagination, can challenge assumptions and reveal new ways of seeing the world.
